Another murder in Surrey Saturday for a record 23 in 2013

The murder rate in Surrey continues to climb, with the slaying early Saturday of a man at a booze can in the 9100 block of 147A Street.

The house is notorious for after hours drinking and the accompanying problems that come with it.

The murder is the second homicide this week and the 23rd in Surrey so far in 2013 – a record for the city.

Woman charged in murder of respected Kwantlen Elder

A 41-year-old woman has been arrested in Quebec City and charged in the March 2011 murder of a respected elder of the Kwantlen First Nation.
Michele Marie Serdar was picked up Nov. 24 on one count of second-degree murder in the slaying of George Antone.
She will be transported to B.C. within days to make her first appearance on the charge, Sgt. Bari Emam, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said Tuesday.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is on the scene of another murder tonight after the body of a woman in her 60s was found inside a Burnaby apartment.

Cpl. Dominic Duchesneau said Burnaby RCMP received a 911 call about 4:30 p.m. Monday  for assistance in the 4900 block of Hastings St.

IHIT announces charges and guilty pleas in murder files

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team provided updates in three separate murder files Thursday.

Two young men that had been charged with first degree murder in the December 2011 slaying of Branson Sanders pleaded guilty in Surrey Provincial Court to manslaughter instead.

Shakib Shakib and Brandon Nandan, both 20, will be sentenced in March 2014.

As well, a 17-year-old pleaded guilty to Attempting to Obstruct Justice in the case. His sentencing is set for March 18, ...

Red Scorpion Matt Campbell slain in Abbotsford Thursday

A man fatally attacked near the Abbotsford Auto Mall Thursday was Red Scorpion gang leader Matt Campbell, The Vancouver Sun has learned.

Sources confirmed that Campbell was the victim of the attack just before 3:45 p.m. in the 30100-block of Automall Drive.

He was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is on the scene of a suspected murder in the 8400 block of Steveston Highway.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the probe into human remains that were found near the Fraser River in Abbotsford Sunday.
IHIT Sgt. Adam MacIntosh said in a release that an autopsy will be performed on the remains to determine if the case is in fact a murder.

Just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance in the 9300-block of 132 Street.
They found a 39-year-old man with serious stab wounds.  He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

IHIT announces arrest in murder of hockey mom Julie Paskall

Family and friends of the Julie Paskall got the news they had been waiting for when the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team announced Friday that an arrest had been made in the slaying of the hockey mom.

No details of who has been taken into custody were revealed as the suspect has not yet been charged. There is an IHIT news conference Saturday afternoon where more information is expected to be released.

Yosef Jomo Gopaul charged in murder that shook Surrey – UPDATE

Yosef Jomo Gopaul made his first appearance in Surrey Provincial Court this morning and was remanded to June 13th. He’s being represented by Simon Buck, who’s well-known on this blog as the lawyer for Surrey Six accused killer Cody Haevischer.

Gopaul has one aggravated assault conviction related to an attack in Brampton, Ontario on New Year’s day 2010.

He got a two-year, seven-month sentence which expired last June, according to the Parole Board of Canada....

Surrey murder rate way down in 2014 despite two slayings in four days

Despite two murders in four days, Surrey’s homicide rate is well below where it was at the same time last year.

Including the suspicious death of a young woman on New Year’s Day this year, Surrey has had seven homicides in 2014, compared to 13 by the same date in 2013.

Timothy Szabolcsi, 52, had a long history as a conman in both Canada and the United States.
