The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says a man was killed and a second wounded at the Browns’ Socialhouse at 200th Avenue and the Langley Bypass near Willowbrook Mall.

Police were called to the scene just before midnight Friday.

Here’s my colleague’s story:

If I learn more today, I will try to update this post.

One man is dead and another is in hospital after a Friday night shooting near a busy Langley restaurant.

According to RCMP, the “targeted” shooting happened just before midnight on Friday. Police found one man with gunshot wounds and another man already dead in the parking lot outside Brown’s Socialhouse, near Willowbrook Mall at 20065 Langley Bypass.

The survivor was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. No further updates were provided Saturday afternoon about his condition.

It’s unclear whether the two victims were known to each other, though police have said the shooting appears to be targeted. As of 2 p.m. Saturday, police were still working to notify relative of the deceased.

A statement posted by staff to the Browns Socialhouse Facebook page Saturday morning said the restaurant was still closed.

“Thank you everyone for your concern over the recent incident in the parking lot near Browns Socialhouse Langley Centre. Luckily no guests or staff were harmed, and all are now safe at home,” it read.

“We are working with the authorities, and as such are awaiting the green light from them to re-open. Thank you for your patience.”

Langley RCMP, the multi-jurisdictional police Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, forensic evidence investigators, and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating.

“This was a brazen shooting in a busy restaurant putting the public at risk,” said IHIT spokeswoman Cpl. Meghan Foster.

“We urge anyone with information regarding this shooting to contact police.”

Langley murder victim identified as Vancouver Island criminal

Homicide investigators are looking for witnesses after the targeted murder of a Victoria man outside a Langley pub on Friday night.

Tyler Pastuck, 31, was shot to death just before midnight outside the Brown’s Socialhouse at 200th St. and the Langley Bypass, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Monday.

A second man, Kyle Gianis, was wounded in the shooting and remains in hospital.

Both men have criminal ties.

Pastuck was convicted of manslaughter in a fatal beating outside his Campbell River townhouse in February 2010. Before the slaying, he already had several assault convictions in Vancouver and Campbell River.

Gianis was convicted in 2008 of smuggling the chemical used to make methamphetamine into Washington state and sentenced to 13 years. He was transferred to a Canadian jail in June 2012 and paroled in 2013.

Jail officials told his parole hearing that Gianis had been associating in Mountain Institution with “known members and associates of the UN and Dhak-Duhre gangs.”

Sources said Gianis has maintained ties to various drug gangs and could have been the intended target of the shooting.

IHIT Cpl. Megan Foster said the two shooting victims “were known to each other and this shooting is believed to be targeted.”

Pastuck’s family has set up a gofundme page to help cover funeral costs and other expenses.

On the page, they say Pastuck was supposed “to catch a flight to the Yukon for employment” on the night of his murder.

“Upon his arrival at the airport, Tyler was informed that his flight was cancelled until the next morning. To pass some time, Tyler decided to phone a friend and together they decided to go to a restaurant for a nice meal,” the online note says. “Little did anyone know his fate would be so tragic that night.”

The family is trying to raise $15,000.

Foster said that after the murder, police found a burning vehicle a short distance away near the intersection of 203rd St. and 63rd Ave.

“At this time, it cannot be confirmed if this vehicle was involved in the homicide. Anyone with information about this vehicle is asked to contact the police,” Foster said.

She said IHIT continues to work with the Langley RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Section, and the B.C. Coroner’s Service.

“Investigators will remain in the area to conduct area canvassing as the initial evidence gathering phase is still underway,” Foster said. “This act of violence was committed in a brazen fashion, and it was a flagrant disregard for the safety of the public.”

RCMP investigating suspicious death of teenage girl in Burnaby park

It’s the nightmare that gnaws at parents everywhere.

A 13-year-old Burnaby girl reported missing at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday was found dead less than two hours later in a popular city park.

“Something like this is the biggest fear I have,” Anthony Pezzolla said, cycling with his six-year-old son close to the brush — near Patterson Avenue — where Marrisa Shen’s body was discovered at 1:10 a.m. in Central Park, not far from her home.

“I’m always asking my son, ‘Where are you?’ ” Pezzolla said. “This is scary, obviously. I’m shocked, scared and sad.”

“We try to come here once a week. It’s one of the nicest parks near us. Now it’s shocking and eerie to ride through it.

“I can’t imagine (Shen’s) parents, how they feel. It’s just such a horrible thought. It’s my biggest fear. I’m always close to the kids. I always need to see them.”

Marrisa Shen, a 13-year-old Burnaby girl, was found dead in Central Park.

The investigation into Shen’s death has been handed over to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

“The initial investigation suggests she was the victim of a homicide,” IHIT spokeswoman Cpl. Meghan Foster said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. “Until we confirm more facts in this case, the risk to the public, if any, is unknown.”

“This is an opportunity to remind your kids, and all members of your family, in fact, about the importance of personal safety and to not take it for granted.”

Foster said investigators had no suspects.

Shen, who was due to start high school in the fall, was last seen at home Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Her last contact with her family was a phone call at 5 p.m. Police said there were minimal details of her whereabouts at the time of the call. They declined to say which party made the phone call.

Many details into a cause of death are unknown, police said.

Police want to speak to any witnesses in the area or anyone who knew Shen.

The entrance to Central Park in Burnaby was behind police tape Wednesday as investigators scoured the area. A wooded trail that runs from the pitch-and-putt golf course to the tennis courts was closed by police. The golf course remained open.

Park users were generally stunned about the police presence.

Jogger Peter Bach.

“Yeah, of course, it’s absolutely shocking,” said Peter Bach after his weekly jog. “I have a 12-year-old daughter myself and an 11-year-old. I’m just stunned.”

The grisly news was juxtaposed with the setting: Lower Pond, nestled next to the forest conservation area where Shen’s body was found, bordered by overhanging trees, ducks peacefully navigating its placid water.

Pat Hamed grew up nearby.

“This is so terrible,” she said. “I have 14- and 16-year-old sons. Something like this would be my worst nightmare.”

“It’s so serene and restful here, then to hear this news …”

Diane Nguyen just moved to the area from Montreal. Fresh off a run through the park, she said the news won’t make her change her jogging venue.

“It’s really sad,” she said. “But things like this happen in big cities. I could change parks, but what’s to say the same thing couldn’t happen there?”

Satellite photo of Burnaby’s Central Park displayed by IHIT.

Kathy Lynn, a longtime speaker on parenting who is based in Vancouver, said the tragic death of the teen should remind parents to speak to their kids about staying safe.

“Parents can certainly remind kids about being aware of where they are and who is around. If they don’t feel comfortable, they should get to a safe place like a friend’s house, a store or a police station,” Lynn said.

“Don’t be brave. If you are not comfortable do what you have to do to be comfortable.”

Teens should always try to go out with a group of friends and not on their own.

Lynn said cellphones may give teens and parents a false sense of security.

“All it is is a phone. It doesn’t do anything. Having a phone doesn’t mean you don’t pay attention and look after yourself,” she said.

But even following all the precautions one can, there are times where parents have no control.

“The reality is we don’t always have control. In this day and age we feel like we should always have some control and sometimes we don’t,” Lynn said.

New video shows 13-year-old Burnaby homicide victim Marrisa Shen hours before body found

Investigators released surveillance footage of the Burnaby teenager found dead in Central Park while at the same time confirming on Thursday that her death is being treated as a homicide.

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Cpl. Meghan Foster said the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is still working to figure out the motive and identify a suspect in the slaying of 13-year-old Marrisa Shen.

Shen was reported missing around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and her body was found just after 1 a.m. Wednesday on the southeast side of Central Park.

Foster said evidence recovered so far doesn’t indicate whether she was a targeted victim of the homicide or if it was a random attack.

Marrisa Shen, a 13-year-old Burnaby girl, was found dead in Central Park.

Investigators recovered surveillance video from an apartment building close to the crime scene showing the teen apparently walking toward the building hours before she was last seen leaving her Burnaby home at 6:02 p.m., Foster said.

“The video is merely to aid those in the area because we believe she was wearing the same clothing, she was of the same description — it’s just better video to provide you with,” said Foster.

In the video, Shen can be seen wearing a dark-coloured T-shirt, shorts and runners.  Police said it appeared to be the clothing she was found with.

Foster said she couldn’t confirm where, exactly, the video came from and whether it was taken outside her home. She said investigators were releasing the video in the hope that someone might recall having seen her after 6 p.m. in the vicinity of the crime scene.

Investigators don’t believe Shen was in distress during a phone call she made around 5 p.m. Tuesday, said Foster, adding that she couldn’t share who Shen was speaking with at the time.

Foster couldn’t provide many details early in the investigation but stressed the importance of anyone who saw Shen contacting IHIT.

“Ms. Shen was a good kid and she’s missed dearly by her family right now,” Foster said. “They’re in the initial stages of grieving and we’re working and doing the best we can to find those responsible, and we need the help of the public.”

Thursday morning, dozens of RCMP officers and Vancouver police officers teamed up to conduct a grid search of the park where Shen was found. Foster said investigators were canvassing the area to ensure they hadn’t overlooked anything.

Search by RCMP and Vancouver police at Central Park in Burnaby, Thursday, July 20 2017 after the suspicious death of 13-year-old Marrisa Shen.

Foster said it’s unclear how long it will be before Central Park fully reopens as investigators continue combing the area.

But with no suspect or motive determined for Shen’s homicide, earlier police warnings for the public to stay vigilant still stand, Foster said.

“Those public safety issues are still unknown,” she said.

“Until we confirm more facts in this case, the risk to the public — if any — is unknown, but we ask that they remain vigilant until further updates can be provided,” authorities said in a statement on Wednesday.

Anyone who may have seen Shen after 6 p.m. on Tuesday is asked to contact investigators at 1-877-551-IHIT, or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

Teen with 'most beautiful soul' ID'd as body found in torched SUV

A bright young student who recently recovered from a kidney transplant and was finally able to live a normal life was murdered this week, leaving friends and family calling for justice.

Bhavkiran Dhesi’s body was found inside a burnt-out vehicle in Surrey on Wednesday morning, after first responders were called to the 18700-block 24th Avenue for a car fire.

Once the fire was put out, Dhesi’s body was found inside and homicide investigators were called.

Known to friends as Kiran, the 19-year-old was a student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and had been on kidney dialysis since Grade 9. She recently had a successful kidney transplant and had recovered, said a friend who did not want to be identified.

“She persevered through all of that and to have this happen is overwhelming for her family,” said Cpl. Meghan Foster of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. “They’re very upset and our thoughts and hearts are with them right now.”

On Thursday, IHIT released Dhesi’s name and photo and asked anyone with information to come forward, but made little other information public.

Foster indicated police were speaking with a person or persons who may have information about the death but did not go into detail.

Bhavkiran (Kiran) Dhesi, 19 of Surrey, was found dead inside a burnt-out SUV on Wednesday morning. Homicide investigators say the murder is not believed to be random.

“I can’t speak to the nature of the association in which these persons of interests are,” said Foster, when asked if any of the people being interviewed was a boyfriend or if they had criminal associations.

“What we’re hoping is that people who knew her will contact us so we can follow up with them and move forward in our investigation.”

Police said Dhesi was last seen when she left the family home at 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Her death is not random, she is not known to police, and her death is not related to gang activity.

“As I understand it, she was not known to us,” said Foster when asked if Dhesi had ever approached police for help or if she was known in any other cases being investigated.

Foster said Dhesi had sustained injuries “consistent with homicide” and that the site where the car was found was not believed to be where the murder took place.

In a Facebook post Thursday afternoon that has since been made private, a friend called Dhesi “the most beautiful soul” and said that she could always be caught with “a smile on her beautiful face.”

“We can’t keep seeing this in the community and there needs to be a change,” the friend wrote.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-4448, or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477.

Surrey woman found in burned car was ready to 'live a normal life'

Life looked promising for 19-year-old Bhavkiran Dhesi.

After recovering from a kidney transplant earlier this year, Dhesi was finally able to consider far-off destinations and other travel plans. She had recently gone back to working out at a gym and was determined to get healthy after so many years of being in and out of hospitals. Despite missing classes every other day due to dialysis, she was on track to completing a degree in criminology and graduating from Kwantlen Polytechnic University with her friends.

“She was very excited to finally be able to travel and live a normal life,” said a friend of Dhesi’s, who asked not to be named due to concerns about safety.

“She had so many aspirations and dreams which were all taken away from her that night.”

The 19-year-old Surrey woman, known to friends and family as Kiran, was last seen Tuesday evening when she left home to have dinner with friends.

Just three hours later, her body was found inside a vehicle that had been on fire in South Surrey. Homicide investigators have said the death is not random and that it is not gang related.

Dhesi’s uncle Kulvant Dhesi also spoke to Global News on Friday, saying the family is “devastated” by Dhesi’s death.

“There’s nothing else we can do for Kiran,” he told Global. “But at least we can stop it from happening to someone else’s child.”

On Thursday, the Kwantlen Student Association also released a statement on Dhesi’s death.

“It is with great anger that we condemn the violence surrounding her death,” the statement read. “On behalf of the Kwantlen Student Association and the KPU community, we offer our sincere condolences to Kiran’s family and friends.”

Dhesi, who grew up in Surrey, had been undergoing dialysis since Grade 9 and had been waiting years for the kidney transplant. She finally received a transplant earlier this year and had recovered, according to her friend.

“Her mother spent every other day at dialysis with Kiran for six hours a day. They were very close and it’s a crushing blow to her mother to lose her child after she had finally begun her road to recovery,” said Dhesi’s friend.

The young woman was also a “huge shopper” and had a keen eye for style and makeup, often sharing fashion advice with friends.

“Kiran was a loving person who did no harm to anyone. She would always be there for her friends and family whenever they needed her,” said the friend.

“Whoever did this to Kiran deserves to have the harshest punishment possible for taking away the life of such an amazing woman.”

REAL SCOOP: Man shot to death in driveway of Surrey home – UPDATED

Two years ago, Pardeep Singh was shot in Surrey’s gang conflict, but survived.

On Tuesday night, he wasn’t so lucky.

The 22-year-old Surrey man with gang links is just the latest to die in a targeted murder.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said in a new release that Singh was shot to death in the driveway of his Cloverdale home. He was found inside a vehicle.

“Mr. Singh was known to police, and was associated to gangs.  Investigators are working to determine motive, but believe that Mr. Singh’s murder was targeted,” Cpl. Meghan Foster said.

Frustrated police released Singh’s name and those of several others at an April 2015 news conference in Surrey. Then-chief officer Bill Fordy said the young criminals were refusing to cooperate with police even when they had been shot.

The victims made outrageous comments like the bullets “fell from the sky” when they were asked about suspects in the shootings.

Foster said investigators in Singh’s murder “are looking for a suspect vehicle described as a light coloured minivan that fled the area after the shooting occurred.”

Staff Sgt. Dale Carr said earlier that police responded to reports of a shooting in the 6300-block of 166 Street about 8:45 p.m.

“Once officers were on scene they discovered a deceased male in a vehicle on the driveway of his home,” Carr said.

He said investigators are conducting neighbourhood canvassing and speaking with witnesses to obtain further information.

“The investigation is still in its early stages.  Initial indications are that this is a targeted incident,” he said.

Surrey RCMP Serious Crime investigators will work with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team on the case, Carr said.

UPDATED Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017: The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has identified the victim of Monday’s fatal shooting as Nick Khabra, 28.

And IHIT Cpl. Meghan Foster said the woman who was also shot is expected to survive.

“Mr. Khabra and the female victim are known to each other and were together at the time of the shooting,” Foster said in a news release.  “The investigation to date leads police to believe that Mr. Khabra’s homicide was a targeted act.”

Khabra has a criminal history.

In 2011, he was arrested by the Gang Task Force and charged with a number of firearms offences. Within days, those charges were withdrawn.

Two years earlier in 2009, he was handed a six-month conditional sentence for dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

In a related civil suit, Khabra was ordered in 2011 to pay the person he struck $205,000, according to records of the case obtained by Postmedia.

Here’s my updated story:

Earlier post – Monday, Oct. 23, 2017:

Homicide investigators have taken over the probe of a double shooting in south Surrey that left one and dead and a second victim in hospital.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team arrived on the scene of the shooting in the 14300-block of Crescent Road about 8 a.m. Monday.

Surrey RCMP had been called to the location about 2: 10 a.m.

The first officers to arrive found a man nearby suffering from gunshot wounds. He later succumbed to his injuries.

The RCMP also received a call from a woman suffering from gunshot wounds who had driven herself away from the scene.  She is now in hospital in serious condition.

Police said the shooting appears to be targeted, but that the investigation has just begun.

A 28-year-old Surrey man has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting in early Monday morning.

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team Cpl. Meghan Foster said Nicholas Khabra died in a targeted attack that also wounded his female companion.

“Mr. Khabra and the female victim are known to each other and were together at the time of the shooting,” Foster said in a news release. “The investigation to date leads police to believe that Mr. Khabra’s homicide was a targeted act.”

Surrey RCMP responded to a shots fired call in the 14300-block of Crescent Road about 2:10 a.m. Monday.

“When police arrived, a male victim was located suffering from gunshot wounds and was transported by the British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS) to hospital where he later died,” Foster said.

She said the wounded woman called police from her vehicle a short distance away to say that she had also been shot,

She was located on Highway 99 at exit 10 and was transported by ambulance to hospital for treatment, Foster said.

“The female victim is expected to survive her injuries and her name will not be released.”

An investigator checks the front entry way of a house on the 14300-block of Crescent Road in Surrey following an early morning shooting where one man was killed and a woman was left in serious condition.

She said IHIT is working with the Surrey RCMP, and the Forensic Identification Section to gather and review evidence.

“Shortly after the homicide occurred, a vehicle was recovered in Langley after it was deliberately set on fire. It remains early in the investigation and police cannot confirm if this vehicle had any involvement in the homicide of Mr. Khabra,” she said.
